Updates to 10th Edition Guide

These are permanent changes to Mid State Trail System not yet reflected in our published Guide.

Section 5, S to N, km 28.16: MST is blazed again north from here to Ravensburg State Park. N to S, km 1.63: MST is blazed again from here to Sand Spring junction. Trail conditions on this portion of route are not the responsibility of MSTA.

Section 8, S to N, km 0.00: MST was relocated in 2001, as advertised. New route is shorter by over 2 km but still climbs as far, with less of PA 44 but more scenery, such as a waterfall and one of the thickest stands of mountain-laurel in the state. View at km 4.33 is reached by blue blazed side trail. N to S, km 14.02: MST was relocated in 2001, as advertised. New route is shorter by over 2 km but still descends as far, with one of the thickest stands of mountain-laurel in the state, a waterfall, and far less of PA 44. Click here for a map.

Section 10, entire section is now a spur route, still connecting Blackwell directly to West Rim Trail, see below for link to temporary guide and map to new MST north of Blackwell. Orange blazes and waterfalls remain on the MST West Rim Spur. The notorious sidehill at km 0.18 (S to N) was stabilized by KTA Trail Crew in 2004.

Section 11, S to N, km 23.22, and N to S, km 7.08: Fire tower at MST's highest point was removed on March 16, 2002, click here for details.

Section 13: A relocation away from Snake Spring Valley Road, onto private land and more sections of SGL 73, opened in November 2005. KTA Trail Care and Trail Crew has worked hard to open a path through and over many rocks reaching dramatic viewpoints. Order new MSTA Map 304 for details. $2.00 plus SASE to: MSTA, PO Box 167, Boalsburg PA 16827.

Section 13: S to N, km 24.59, and N to S, km 1.12: The MST crossing of Yellow Creek has been relocated westerly onto a road bridge at Loysburg. Follow the orange blazes on the run around. We need your help to replace the bridge described in the 10th edition Guide.

Tioga Region (not in 10th edition guide):

A 24 km section of MST is now open on PA Grand Canyon's East Rim, through the scenic valley of Stony Fork, over Tannery Hill, to dance on then descend the west rim Wilson Creek valley. The following Guide and Map, describe this route between PA 414 and PA 287. Also note high water route map around Stony Fork Creek.

85.1 km has been opened in the Tioga Region between Blackwell and the New York border.
Several maps show this northernmost MST:

An overview of the Tioga Region maps is available here. The online guide to the 42.8 km, covering both maps, is available here in Adobe Acrobat format.
